April 27 – Weekend Recap

USPKS Nationals

April 24-26 Mooresville, NC – GoPro Motorplex

A special thanks goes out to Kathy Churchill Photography for the awesome shots of our drivers this weekend!

This weekend marked the Season opener for the United States Pro Kart Series, a top level national karting series, and the Innovative Performance Team came prepared for everything North Carolina brought them. Friday, open practice, provided a good view as to where the team was and where the team needed to be. Unfortunately rain plagued us on Saturday. Sunday brought us questionable weather as it was wet for qualifying but dried out by finals.

#28Matthew Northrop brings the Innovative Performance Team a very quick, skilled, Junior driver. The rain unfortunately did not play in his favor, but he was able to run 5th on Sunday for a bit before fading slightly to 8th. Awesome job for your first ever national event! We will keep digging and improving before round 2!

TJ Koyen3The team was able to pull off a podium (3rd) from TJ Koyen in Yamaha 100 Pro on Saturday!

His pace, consistency, and ability to make minimal mistakes in the rain led to his podium! Sunday Koyen had the race pace for a podium, but unfortunately lost the draft early on. Better watch out at U.S. Air Motorsports Raceway, as we’ll be looking to capitalize there! Great job TJ!

#45 2This past weekend marked the first time Patrick Olsen ever ran in a Leopard powered kart. In addition this was the first time ever in the kart! As you can imagine going from a Yamaha 100cc motor to a Leopard 125cc motor, the change was drastic.

Getting accustomed was no problem for Patrick, but a DNF placed him in 20th for the final on Saturday. His hard work, dedication, and ability to avoid wrecks landed him with a 6th place! Unfortunately he did not do as well on Sunday, but he will be ready, come round 2 of the USPKS series tour!

Tommy anderson 2This weekend marked one of the more difficult weekends for Tommy Andersen. Whenever he made a step forward, mechanical issues and wrecks set him two steps back. Throughout the weekend he had opportunities where he shined, like from starting 28th and moving up to 11th, only to finish with a DNF. Luckily this weekend is only the beginning of the season and we have 3 more weekends to go.

All in all this was a great learning experience for the team. We gained a lot of data over the 3 days we were in Moorseville, and we will be more ready than ever come US Air. Lastly, congrats to our team members, running the local club series, for winning and keeping us up front!
