June 17 – Route 66 – USAIR Podium Domination

The Lab Rats were at it again this weekend at USAIR Motorsports Raceway, in Shawano, WI. We came looking to compliment our winnings from the WKA Manufacturers Cup event at Briggs & Stratton Raceway Park and we did in a big way.

Going from a stout 9 kart field for Man Cup to a super competitive 30 kart field, filled with USPKS front runners, Route 66 speedsters, and several local champions, we had our work cut out for us. We showed good pace Friday, and TJ put us in 5th for the Prefinal on Saturday. Rains came and we were able to get our setup just right in which we ended up taking 2nd for Saturday’s Final. As Sunday strolled in the rain was gone and we were able to get back to our dry setup. While we had some slight clutch issues we were able to put the Innovative Gold Tony Kart on the 2nd row in 4th position. The final is where the test was really met, and we showed awesome pace. We took the lead early and led most of the race. Unfortunately we were overtaken on the last lap,and an unfortunate move gave the initial winner, Brandon Lemke, a 1 spot position penalty which gave us victory! None of this would have been able to happen without the perfect driving done by Innovative Performance Driver TJ Koyen! Great driving!

Saturdays final was a damp one, but we were able to run on slicks. We had 5 Innovative drivers on track out of the 19 competitors.

All of our drivers showed awesome pace and great improvements throughout the weekend. Josh Hotz made great progress this weekend by taking home 2 podiums. He was consistently up front all weekend and it shows that our team spirit has really helped him improve as a driver.

Saturday Josh was able to move from 6th to 4th and was the 2nd fastest driver on track. Kindra Hurlbert came home 7th on Saturday .7 sec behind 6th. Emily Hurlbert finished 9th on Saturday with a tough battle between Andrick Zeen, Rett Thomas, and Austin Erikson. Way to hold onto that top 10! Drew Fortini fell just shy of a top 10 finishing 12th. Unfortunately Will Stone did not finish Saturday’s Event due to being sent off track by another driver.

Kindra Hurlbert was able to take home a 2nd on Sunday chasing down Brandon Lemke with Josh Hotz taking home a hard fought 4th after battling back and forth with Colton Ramsey. Emily Hurlbert had started 6th but unfortunately had an issue and did not finish. Had she finished she was looking to take home a top 10 finish. Due to William Stone’s injuries from the prefinal, Tommy Anderson, Williams replacement, showed awesome pace moving up all the way to 7th place before a wreck ended his race. Had he finished he was looking to take home a top 10 finish.

Matthew Northrop was fast all weekend! He was leading practices, passing a lot of other racers, and taking the podium by storm. Saturday he qualified 4th, stayed in 4th in the rain for the prefinal, and he was able to take home 3rd for the final! The rain did not effect this youngster as he took the podium Saturday. Sunday came along and he continued showing great pace. After qualifying 6th, he made his “worst” finish of the weekend finishing 7th. This did not phase Matthew as he worked hard, got a great start, and moved his way back up to 4th for the final. Matthew has shown he has what it takes to lead a pack and go fast. Keep your eyes out for him as he will be looking to continue this streak of top 5s!

Zachary Collins showed great pace this weekend, and even though he faced unlucky circumstances, he was still able to muster off a 6th place! Great job kid! Keep up the good work.
